Following the release of US Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the last remaining American prisoner of war in Afghanistan, last weekend, the Taliban released a video of the dramatic exchange which occurred at Pakistan-Afghanistan border around 10:30 Saturday morning.

The 28-year-old soldier had been held captive for five years before his release, which came in exchange for five Taliban detainees held at Guantánamo Bay, The New York Times reports.

In the video posted on the Telegraph’s YouTube account, Sgt. Bergdahl is seen initially waiting in a car before the exchange happens. Flanked by Taliban members, Bergdahl is then seen waiting for a Black Hawk helicopter to land, looking slightly anxious yet calm.

In a matter of seconds, Sgt. Bergdahl is led to meet with two non-uniformed men, who emerge from the helicopter to briefly shake hands with the Taliban militants before embracing the soldier in what can have only been an emotional and relieving moment. The three men slowly walk back to the helicopter and board,before it takes off a few seconds later. The Times reports that Sgt. Bergdahl was in good physical condition at the time of his release.

President Obama is said to have personally called Sgt. Bergdahl’s parents after he was safely in American hands and met with them later Saturday at The White House.

“We cannot wait to wrap our arms around our only son,” Robert and Jani Bergdahl said in a statement.

Today, we are ecstatic!”

A senior defense department official reported Sunday that Sgt. Bergdahl had arrived at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. He is said to be getting transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas as soon as he gets cleared to travel by doctors.
