According to a report from the Nikkei Asian Review, Apple will be releasing the iPhone 6 sometime in September. The report cites suppliers as ramping up production to meet the September release date. This corroborates an earlier report that suppliers were about to ramp up production.

The report from Nikkei says the iPhone would come in two screen sizes, 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch, turning the iPhone into a phablet—a murky, phone/tablet middle ground.

Apple is the only manufacturer still offering four-inch screens, which adorn the iPhone 5 and 5S. Android, Apple’s biggest competitor, has a slew of phones from HTC and Samsung that have five-inch screens.

In addition to the larger screen, Nikkei says that Apple will significantly increase screen resolution as well. Will we finally see an updated version of the retina display on the iPhone? Let’s hope so.

The iPhone 6 comes at a time where many feel Apple hasn’t had a really innovative product in a while.

According to Brian Marshall at ISI, the iPhone 6 will be the “mother lode” of upgrade cycles for Apple. Not only will the larger screens mark a significant departure from older iPhones, but it will vary drastically in design and features as well, which Marshal expects to lead to big sales.
