A firefighter and SWAT team medic from Columbus, Ohio, has invented a device that he says could save lives in the event of an active shooter situation in a building.

Troy Lowe, a decorated military veteran, created the Barracuda Intruder Defense System to secure vertical doors in an emergency. Lowe has been teaching shooter response programs for years and says he was inspired to create a product that would help ensure people’s safety after observing how people reacted in pressured situations.

I’ve seen first-hand how quickly they panic and lose their fine motor skills during these simple training exercises,” Lowe says in a demonstration video for the Barracuda Intruder Defense System. “This typical reaction made me realize that there is a need for a security product that is easy to use, strong and highly effective in the event of an actual emergency or a lockdown situation.”

The Barricuda Intruder Defense System can be used on inward or outward swinging doors and over scission action door closers. The stainless-steel defense system is made so it can be installed in a matter of seconds, and it’s free-standing so it can be removed easily when necessary.

When they were tested in the factory, the door failed before the devices did,” Lowe told Fox28 News. “There’s potential to save a lot of lives.”

Regional manufacturer Bilco has been commissioned to make the Barracuda Intruder Defense System, and is selling it for around $100, Fox 28 reports. Those interested in buying the product should email the company for exact pricing at barracuda@bilco.com.
